British colonialism.png

A decisive moment for the Cape Colony occurred in 1806 when Britain seized it during the Napoleonic Wars. The colony was important as a strategic base to protect Britain’s developing empire in India. In the next few years, however, it also served as a market, a source of raw materials, and an outlet for emigration from Britain.
